Reviews - Effortless Regurgitation... The Torture Sessions (CD 1999)

Terrorizer - 1999
Thank Jesus Christ for Relapse. While Black Metal is getting all the props, these guys have shown an undying [sic] commitment to true Grindcore and Death metal. They have recognised Sweden's Regurgitate as an important part of grind history circa '93-'94, so the "Effortless Regurgitation... The Torture Sessions" compilation has sixty-three remastered tracks of Carcass meets Repulsion gore and has revealed a band whose "music" will never date. Essential for the completists. (8.5/10)

The Gates of Hell webzine - 1999?
The first thing you notice with this CD is that there is 63 tracks on it - 63! It must be a grind release then! Which of course, it is - one of the earlier goregrind bands in existance, Regurgitate, to be precise. The disc isn't just one album, it's a collection of many classic Regurgitate releases. The main bulk (tracks 1-37) are from the album "Effortless Regurgitation of Bright Red Blood" from 1994, with the rest (38-63) lifted from their "Concrete Human Torture" demo and the split 7" with Psychotic Noise. The music itself is very simple in it's construction. The majority of the tracks are a minute or less and usually follow the same patterns. Four bars of guitar to intro the song, with the 4th bar having four blasts in it. This then leads onto 8 or 16 bars of whirlwind grind and shifted vocals, then breaking into a hardcore/punk beat. This repeats depending on the length of the song. This may sound repetitive (technically it is) but not all the tracks use this formula, and those that do, do it well enough to keep you interested. It is a task getting through all 63 tracks in one sitting, but it's a generally enjoyable one. It's the changes in song intro's and structures that keep this release fresh. The skills of the band are considerable, even if the overral performance is loose (as the majority of gore soaked grind is - strange that, when grindcore has pathological lyrics, the playing becomes sloppier?) The song titles (and presumably the lyrics - there are none included with this release) are all pathological, and many are nearly identical to Carcass titles (Carnal Cacophony vs. Carneous Cacophony, for example) - some are downright hilarious (Phrenetic Chainsaw Slaughter of a Crippled Infant!). Lyrically this band may resemble Carcass, but the music itself is more like F.E.T.O. Napalm Death, with the hardcore influence showing. It instantly becomes goregrind when the guitars are tuned lower, the vocals put through a synthesizer and the mix level dropped. However, Regurgitate differ from Napalm Death in the seriousness department. ND's lyrics usually had a point to them, but Regurgitate are just having fun being gorey. That's what this release is all about - having fun - so buy it and blast yourself stupid whilst dismembering corpses. (4.5/5)

The Goregrind and Grindcore Webzine - 1999
At last Relapse Records re-issued this gem of visceral gore/grind. The booklet is very thin, but the cd contains more than 60 tracks in 55 minutes! Not uninspired crap, But one of the most exciting gore encrusted piece of musick ever recorded. Sound production is just perfect, all the songs are short, the best way not to turn boring, guitar riffs are catchy, heavy with a little crusty touch at times, drums are thick and blasting, and gurgling vocals are distorted and harmonized beyond belief. This odes not only contain the "Effortless regurgitation of bright red blood" album, but also "Concrete human torture' demo, which is in my mind even better than the album! the sound is little weaker, you can't hear the vox very well... but all the songs simply bash my brain at every listening. More bonus can be found, like older tracks from all the session songs for the split 7" with Psychotic Noise (Raw but always grindy, gory and freaky as fuck!). An early Carcass influence, especially through the insane song titles, and musically something more influenced by early Napalm Death. All the tracks are twisted, blast-crazed, groovy, but all the ways definitely gory, putrid and grinding. With a whole new cover art & packaging, a picture from Fulci's horror masterpiece, The Gates of Hell (aka The City of the Living Dead), and a sickening bowel-regurgitation introduction from the same movie too. I even have to skip it, due to the degree of repulsion it provokes to my stomach hehe. This Cd is an absolute MUST-HAVE. Thanks Relapse for releasing it! This CD also announces great news for the future of REGURGITATE, including a new full length album coming next on the same big label. (5/5)

This is a re-release of this classic discs by grind psychos Regurgitate. Recorded in 3 different sessions, two being at GMB Crematorium, this disc will shred your weak, puny ass. Definetly in the vein of early Carcass (Reek Of Putrefaction, Symphonies of Sickness). Not the most original act when it comes to this type of music but what they do they do damned well. I listen to this shit quite a bit. You should definetly seek this out if this style of grind gives you wood. 63 slabs of pathological grind, grind, grind.

Sick! Just utter Sick is the best word to describe Sweden's Regurgitate. These guys are even sicker than old Cannibal Corpse no shittin' you! The music itself has a death/grind sound to it but the vocalist sounds like he's vomiting out the lyrics (if there really is any) hence the name Regurgitate. The song titles are absolutely disgusting and that's what I like about them :) This album has an amazing 63 songs on it each clocking in at no more than maybe 2 mins a song some way shorter than that.
I can't really pinpoint an exact song that is good because there are so many and alot of them sound the same but I can pinpoint some of the best some titles such as, "Phrenetic Chainsaw Slaughter of a Crippled Infant", Drastical Decapitation of a Raped Infant", "Forced Abotion Through the Rectum" and that's only a short list of it. All 63 songs were not recorded at the same time though. Tracks 1-37 were recorded May 1994, tracks 38-54 were recorded late September 1994 all 54 also remastered in late September 1998 and tracks 55-63 were recorded early January 1993.
So by seeing that I'm guessing this album is 3 demos mixed into one. The album starts off with some guy puking his guts out and explodes into (my personally favorite song) "Disgorging Foetus". From there on, it's an hour of non-stop gut wretching death/grind. The production isn't too bad on this album cept for the vocals. They're very hard to hear and the vocalist (Rikard) isn't understandable at all so I can't even tell if he's actually saying anything.
Later on through the album you can tell a change from the recording quality from the dates recorded I mentioned above. The first set has no too bad recording, 2nd is alot better and the instruments are more tightbut not more clear, and the 3rd set is just awful. Overall though, alot of the songs are quite catchy and easy to get into if you like not being able to understand the vocalist at all and like just hearing pure chaos.
And also inside the CD jacket, they leave the best message in their thanx list which is... "A big FUCK YOU to all pathetic boybands, go fuck yourselves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and I thought that was definately needed and appropriate. So if you wanna hear think disgusting music, try and find this at your local music store and pick it up today. Rate: 8 out of 10

Total gore grind from this bunch of Swedes, taking in their full length "Effortless Regurgitation Of Bright Red Blood" (1994), the "Concrete Human Torture" demo (1994), and their splits with Psychotic Noise and Grudge (1993 and 1994 respectively). This adds up to a monster 63 tracks in 56 minutes! Regurgitate are totally generic, sounding like a cross between Dead Infection and first album Carcass, and having songs like "Purulent Discharge From The Urethra", "Revel In Menstrual Excrements" and the catchy "Forced Abortion Through The Rectum". It's all very fine and good if you like this kind of thing… which of course I do! [7]
